DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAM

A UNIQUE OFFER

- Summer 2016 -

In partnership with KND Sailing Performance, SYRF offered free instrument calibration reports and course wind analysis to yachts willing to share log data with SYRF. Collected boat logs will form the basis for a new SYRF performance database that will soon be available through the SYRF website for use by handicappers and researchers.

To date, portions of collected boat logs, such as observed wind data, have been used by handicappers to better understand how predicted course models differed from observed conditions. Using the observed wind mix and course model, handicappers have rescored races, such as the 2016 Bayview to Mackinac Race, to quantify performance and handicap crossovers across a wide range of sailboats.

Composite wind files from the NYYC Annual, NYYC Race Week, Bayview to Mackinac, and Chicago to Mackinac races are now available below and through the SYRF Technical Resources Library.

WHY IS SYRF DOING THIS?

The objective of this project is to build a database of well calibrated boat performance data that can be used to validate and improve rating formulae. In exchange for sharing log data, participating boat owners will receive complimentary instrument calibration reports that will improve the quality of the data collected for the database. Over the long term, this project aims to demonstrate the value that can be derived from the collective sharing of yacht data and to encourage the sharing of information for the betterment of the sport.

HOW CAN I SIGN UP?

SYRF offered complimentary instrument calibration reports for participating boats during the 2016 summer season. In partnership with KND Sailing Performance, SYRF will work to automate the report generation process over the winter of 2016-2017 to expand the Data Analysis Program for 2017. If you are interested in sharing your boat's log data with SYRF, please contact SYRF's Executive Director, McKenzie Wilson.

SYRF welcomes all boats interested in sharing log data to participate.
